Streams flowing into Lough Gill by Catchments.ie
Lough Gill (Lough Gill) is about 8 km (or 5 miles) long and 2 km (or 1 mile) wide. The Lough Gill system consists of two main rivers, the Bonet River that flows into the eastern end of the lough and the River Garavogue which drains the lough to the west at Sligo Harbour, near Sligo Town
The freshwater lough is designated as part of a Special Area of Conservation, and boasts some 20 small uninhabited islands. There are also numerous small streams around the lough, mostly unnamed, which add also water to the catchment.
Since 2007, LAWPRO, (the Local Authority Waters Programme), have been conducting field studies and holding community meetings in this area, to learn more about the lough and identify issues of concern. With studies of the small streams having begun in 2022, we await their conclusions.
