Our Vision

Healthy, resilient and connected waterbodies that support thriving wildlife, sustainable communities, and future generations throughout the Sligo Bay Catchment.
The Sligo Bay Catchment Rivers Trust CLG believes that clean water, healthy rivers, thriving lakes and rich biodiversity are fundamental to the wellbeing of both people and nature. Our vision is for a catchment where communities value and actively care for their local water environment, where habitats are restored and protected, and where sustainable land and water management supports long-term environmental, social and economic benefits.
We recognise that meaningful and lasting change can only be achieved through partnership. By bringing together communities, landowners, schools, businesses, anglers, farmers, local authorities and environmental organisations, we can work collectively to improve and protect the waters that sustain us all.

Our Five-Year Priorities

Over the next five years we will:
  • Build strong and lasting partnerships with communities, landowners, public bodies, educational institutions and environmental organisations across the catchment.
  • Protect and improve water quality through practical conservation projects, evidence-based decision making and community engagement.
  • Restore and enhance river, lake and wetland habitats to support biodiversity, ecosystem resilience and climate adaptation.
  • Promote nature-based solutions that demonstrate how healthy ecosystems can deliver benefits for people, wildlife and water quality.
  • Increase public awareness, education and participation in the stewardship of our water environment through events, training, citizen science and volunteering opportunities.
  • Support sustainable management of natural resources and encourage actions that reduce pressures on rivers, lakes and coastal waters.
  • Develop a strong, financially sustainable organisation with the capacity, skills and resources needed to deliver meaningful long-term environmental improvements.

Working Together for Change

At the heart of our vision is the belief that every person can make a positive difference. Whether through volunteering, adopting sustainable land management practices, participating in citizen science projects, supporting habitat restoration, or simply learning more about their local environment, individuals and communities play a vital role in protecting our waterways.
We are committed to being inclusive and collaborative in all aspects of our work. By empowering local people with knowledge, skills and opportunities to take action, we aim to create a culture of shared responsibility for the health of our rivers, lakes and coastal waters.
Through practical conservation, education, partnership and community action, we will work to ensure that the Sligo Bay Catchment remains a vibrant and healthy environment that supports wildlife, provides clean water, and enriches the lives of all who live, work and visit here.
Together, we can create thriving waterbodies for the benefit of nature, communities and future generations.
