Working together, volunteers will help remove up to 8,000 Himalayan balsam plants from the Rathcormac area. Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) was introduced as an ornamental garden plant but has spread rapidly along rivers, streams and wetlands throughout Ireland.
The plant outcompetes native vegetation by forming dense stands that shade out wildflowers and grasses. When it dies back each winter, riverbanks can be left exposed and vulnerable to erosion, increasing sediment entering our waterways and impacting aquatic habitats.
By removing Himalayan balsam before it sets seed, we can reduce its spread, improve habitat for native species and help restore healthier river ecosystems for wildlife and people alike.
Whether you’re a regular volunteer or trying conservation work for the first time, we’d love to have you join us.
